NataLee 9-1-1: Teen Bedroom

Dear NataLee,
I am a 16 year old girl who loves reading, relaxing, and hanging out with my friends. I love calm, muted colors and I really just want some place I can relax. I hate my room!

The color is too bright and I feel like everything is crowded together. My dad plans on getting me a smaller flat screen TV and the mini fridge is going out. The box next to my dresser is a bookshelve we recently purchased, in hopes that that would go up and my desk would come out since I never use it (except to throw things on!)

I would appreciate your help soooo much! I’ve seen your work and you are awesome! Thanks so much for taking the time to read this.

Dear Lauren,

Thanks for your great question.  Let me just start out by saying you have some great bones to work with: cool french door, hardwood floors and good basic pieces. Here’s what I would suggest.

To start out put your bed on the opposite wall from where it’s located now. And if your dad hasn’t already put together the new bookcase… maybe you could return and get something similar to the picture below:

Flanking your existing daybed for a more built-in/custom feel.  You said you want something more calm and sophisticated, so I would suggest a color palette of gray/silver, plum/purple, and greens with accents of black and white. I have been saving this room for the perfect time and this is it… I love this room!

Behind your bed/bookcase wall I would put a fun wallpaper up (which is totally hot right now and if you get tired of it, it won’t kill you to take one wall of wallpaper down… which is all I would usually reccomend in any given room).  You could go more subtle like this gray wallpaper…

or this…

Or slightly more bold like this wallpaper.

The rest of your walls paint in a soft gray color.

Use softer grays and whites for your main bedding and pop it with lots of fun pillows with some color and graphics. I would add a white fluffy rug on your floor to soften things up.

If you can find some art like the ones above, I really like those, but I also found some fun prints on www.art.com.  I just did a search on purple flowers and these are a few that I thought would be cool framed in a white mat and silver frame for your room. They had some in more muted tones too. Flank them on the opposite wall to your bed on the right side of your dresser. Mount your flat screen above your dresser.  Your new daybed set up will work well as a comfy sofa.

If you tape off your mirrored closet and use frosted spray paint that you can pick up at Lowe’s or Home Depot. You could mimick the look of your french door.

Well… I hope these ideas help.  We would love to see the finished product!
